A partir de 2004, um programa do CIFAR promoveu encontros regulares entre Geoffrey Hinton, Yann LeCun, Yoshua Bengio e colaboradores. A iniciativa coordenou pesquisas que contribuíram para o renascimento do deep learning, sem ser um ponto inicial único.
